The Murray River. Wind down
On the Water
The Murray River is one the best freshwater playgrounds in Australia, with superb angling opportunities for Murray cod and perch and a long river history with heritage ports recreated in their 19th century glory.

Touring

There are engaging river walks, swimming, boating, kayaking, and paddle steamer and houseboat tours of this grand and glorious body of water. In its day, it was Australia’s largest inland port and is now home to the world’s largest river-boat fleet.

Hire a Houseboat

Swan Hill, Mildura and Wentworth are also popular holiday towns on the Murray with plenty of opportunity to get aboard a paddle-steamer to majestically cruise the Murray. A splendid way to explore the Murray at your own pace is to hire a houseboat. There are scores of houseboat-hire locations all along the Murray.

Boating, Windsurfing and Waterskiing

Lake Hume near Albury - Wodonga and Lake Mulwala at Yarrawonga are also perfect for fishing and water activities. Hire a canoe and explore the many nooks and inlets of Lake Hume or the everglades of Lake Mulwala. There are plenty of opportunities for windsurfing and waterskiing and both lakes provide protection for small sailing craft, dinghies, windsurfers and powered craft. Lake Hume is also big enough to find secluded spots for quiet contemplation and to drop a line in for a spot of angling.

Beaches

As the Murray winds through the district you will find wide sandy river beaches, the largest being Thompsons Beach at Cobram. Thompson beach is easily accessed from the towns of Cobram or Barooga.

Fishing and Rafting

Corryong is surrounded by spectacular mountain peaks. The nearby alpine streams, the Snowy River and the upper reaches of the Murray make the town perfectly placed for trout fishing expeditions and white water rafting trips.
