Albury - Wodonga
Albury-Wodonga is a great gateway to launch a journey of discovery of the wonderful food and wine produced in the district known as the Hume Murray Food Bowl.

History

The twin cities of Albury-Wodonga have retained their respective individual characteristics. Wodonga, on the Victorian side, is one of the largest stock-selling and shipping centres in Australia. Albury, in NSW is an historic hub for both rail and riverboat traffic boasting an enchanting blend of heritage buildings, parks and gardens.

Landscapes

The city’s Huon Hill delivers an awesome panorama of valleys, lush countryside and mountains in the distance.

Food and Wine

Just west of Albury-Wodonga is the famed Rutherglen wine region, one of Australia's oldest. Rutherglen boasts some rare and sought-after vine wine stock, and produces some of the finest fortified wine in the world. Go on a wine tour and explore the local farmers’ food markets. The Rutherglen township dates back to the 1850s gold rush and retains much of its olden days atmosphere.

Activities

An army camp at Bonegilla, 15 minutes’ from Wodonga, was turned into Australia’s largest migrant reception centre after World War II, accommodating the thousands of displaced persons who came to Australia to start anew. Block 19, the only remaining block is open to the public along with an on-site information centre.

The nearby Lake Hume holds six times more water as Sydney Harbour and is a wonderful spot for fishing and water activities. Visit the Hume Wier Trout Farm near the dam wall and try their gourmet produce.

Corowa to the west of Albury-Wodonga, is hailed as the birthplace of Australian Federation. Corowa’s Federation Museum has many exhibits celebrating the Federation Movement including photos and historical documents. The town has a wonderful streetscape full of Federation-style buildings.

The Billabong Creek in Culcairn, hailed as the longest lake in the Southern Hemisphere is a great place to go fishing. Just to the east of Culcairn is the village of Morven offering yabbie farms and an historic Cobb & Co stagecoach station.
