


In the 19th century Wentworth was the centre of Australian river-boat commercial traffic and because of its importance in trade was considered as a site for the nation's capital. Accordingly, this is a must-visit place for anyone interested in Australian history.
Explore the heart of Wentworth for its superb 19th century buildings such as the Anglican church and the post office; the historic Walk and Drive Trail will take you to Old Wentworth Gaol, the courthouse and the convent. Another intriguing place to visit is the Customs Officer's house, where colonial border controls were once enforced.
Wentworth, and the surrounding towns of Dareton, Buronga, Gol Gol and Pooncarie provide wonderful fishing, waterskiing, walks and birdwatching.
Worth visiting in the area are the Perry Sandhills, where skeleton remains of megafauna – giant kangaroos, and wombats – have been found. You can see what they would have looked like at the Pioneer Museum in Wentworth. The Silver City Highway links Wentworth with Broken Hill making it a gateway to the NSW outback, with its plains, deep blue skies, mallee scrub and brick-red earth.
